October 31st 2012
This week I have completed to more task from the research section, these include:
- Analysis of music videos from the same genre (in terms of Camera - Mise en scene - Editing - Narrative)
- Audience Research (Target audience, Uses and Gratifications Theory)

The analysis of music videos from the same genre required me to look at the above four elements and how they ultimately make the music video successful within the music industry and towards their target audience. Therefore, this will benefit when I create my music video as I will consider these elements and additional ones such as the use of colour, props, clothing etc.

The audience research task involved me looking at who I believe the target audience for my music video will be in terms of age and gender, I have also looked at the potential reasons behind my audience will view my audience e.g. in the task I explained many of my audience will still be in school so viewing my music video will allow them to have some escapism from the work they are studying on.

Audience Research

October 31st 2012
The target audience that I have chosen for my music video are females between the age range  of 13-25 (however my music video would be suitable for a male audience who would want to watch the music video); therefore, my music video would appeal to teenagers and young adults. I have chosen the lower end of the age range to be 13 as by this age they generally have chosen what type of music they listen to and they have just entered high school therefore things like friendship and crushes are created (generally what pop songs are about). Additionally, a lot of young girls will aspire to be like the artist in my music video. I have chosen the higher age range in my target audience to be 25 this is because pop music still appeals to young adults and is ultimately used as a form of escapism as the majority of them will be in school/uni/work therefore this kind of music is what they can relax to let the hair down to.

In terms of social class my music video will suit the B-C2 demographic as the parents of my target audience are likely to be working in middle/middle lower class jobs such as intermidate manager, supervisor, clerical etc; once more this introduces the uses and gratifications theory as audiences are likely to watch this music video for escapism and entertainment.

As I am creating a music video in the Pop genre which derives from the term "popular" means that the psychorgraphics of my audience would be 'mainstream' this is because, a large majority of pop music are in the charts, become internationally popular and therefore appeal to a very large audience an example of this is that radios such as Capital FM have a chart segment called 'Big Top 40' in which the majority of songs on the list are Pop therefore illustrating the extent of how these songs are so popular.

Analysis of music videos (same genre)

October 31st 2012
This task involved me finding two music videos from the same genre and analysing four different elements of the videos; these included:
  • Location
  • Mise-en-scene
  • Camera
  • Narrative
Within these four areas I analysed the choices made for the music videos and how or why they conform to the conventions of pop music videos and succesfully portray pop music artists. The two music videos I chose were One Direction "Kiss You" and Katy Perry "Last Friday Night" as I believe both are great examples of a successfull pop music video.

This document will help me when I eventually shoot my music video as I will remember to include all four elements. The document I completed is below.

- Music videos that inspire me

Music Videos that interest/inspire me

October 29th 2012
For this task I went on Youtube and found a few videos that I admire and/or influenced by and have written a brief description below each one.

- Bruno Mars Medley:

What I like about this music video is the continuous interaction the performers have with the camera in addition to this I really like the idea that the music video is a continuous shot where the camera is moving in and out of different rooms in the house. Overall, this is a very basic idea however it is still effective.

- Taylor Swift: We are Never Ever Getting Back Together:

This is another video where the performer is continuously interacting with the camera as the artist goes around the house. The artist Taylor Swift has used "pop elements" such as a catchy hook, repetitiveness in the chorus etc; additionally, a lot of bright colours have been used in the music video in terms of clothes and props. In addition to this the music is very upbeat and what I like is that it builds up near the end of the song which is something that I want to include in my music video.

- Justin Bieber: Beauty and a Beat:

The final music video that I have chosen is by the artist Justin Bieber like the previous two he has taken the interaction one step further with him actually holding the camera in the majority of the music video. When I did my research on the pop genre I found that a lot of pop songs have catchy hooks, beats, and dancing all three are evident in this music video and therefore is something that I will consider when creating my music video. Again a lot of bright and vibrant colours have also been used in this music video as a result I will consider this when thinking about the mise en scene in my music video e.g. clothing, make up, props, location etc.

Music Theory

October 26th 2012
Today I completed a powerpoint on Music Theory, I looked at the 'Uses and Gratifications Theory' which is about why people use pieces of media, I researched Laura Mulvey and 'The Male Gaze' and finally 'Andrew Goodwins' theory. This is useful as it will enable to include some of these aspects in my music video when I go to create e.g. the 5 key features in Andrew Goodwin's theory

October 19th 2012
This week and last Friday I completed three more tasks; two under the 'Planning' section and one task from the 'Research' section, these three tasks included:
- A mood board: This is beneficial as it will give me an insight into the possible choices I have with clothes, props and colours when creating my music video
- My initial idea: In this task I wrote up what my initial idea for my music video was, as this is a "initial" idea I am able to develop this idea in the future.
- Research into possible equipment choices: This is beneficial to me as I know have I full understanding of what equipment is available to me when I go to shoot my music video and how each piece of this equipment is used.

Possible Equipment Choices

October 19th 2012
Below is a video about the possible pieces of equipment I can use on my music video shoot, I created the video on Adobe Premiere. This task is useful as when I come to plan my music video e.g. storyboard I can refer to this so I know what piece of equipment I have access to.

Codes and conventions of pop music video

October 4th 2012
Below is the codes and conventions of a pop music video I redone this slide as previously I had based the slide on the music genre Indie however recently I have changed my choice in genre.

October 4th 2012
During the week I had been basing a lot of my research tasks on the music genre indie; however, I have recently decided that I would like to create a music video that would be in the Pop genre. This is because Pop music videos have the perception of being "too cheesy" and therefore I would like to challenge myself to create a successful pop music video. Therefore I have redone the codes and conventions for a particular music genre (it is now Pop) and I will re-upload this task to my blog.

Codes and conventions of a music video

October 3rd 2012
Below is a PowerPoint presentation on the 'Codes and Conventions of a Music Video' within this powerpoint I look at what codes (technical, verbal/written, symbolic) and conventions (expect to see in a music video) actually mean, next I researched the different forms of a music video and finally I looked at the typical codes and conventions of a music video in the indie genre. The purpose of this piece of research is that it will enable me to follow a few of the typical codes and conventions when I come to shoot my music video as I can use this to refer back to later on.Codes & Conventions of a Music Video
